White House Holds Event Honoring ICE and CBP

Yesterday, the White House hosted an event honoring officers from both Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

Roughly 150 federal law enforcement officers were in attendance at the event, which wasn’t without political undertones, given recent national debate surrounding the funding for ICE and other efforts that focus primarily on immigration and border security, which was a cornerstone of Trump campaign promises.

"This new wave of anti-borders, anti-law enforcement extremism and— shameful, dangerous, it's horrible in every way. And it's going to stop. It's going to stop right now. It's going to stop today. We slowed it down, now we're stopping it," Trump said at the event.

Trump specifically referenced ICE’s current role in the national debate, accusing Democrats of wanting “to abolish America’s borders” through the efforts of some within the party to abolish ICE as an agency.

Trump praised ICE, CBP, and other agencies working along the border, saying, “The poisons are flowing across our border and we're hitting it from every angle, but we need new laws. We need border laws, we need immigrations laws, we need them fast, we're going to get them."

Trump used the occasion to again call for an up to $5 billion increase in funding for his border wall project, also encouraging Americans to vote Republican in the upcoming midterms, warning, “Blue wave means crime, it means open borders. Not good."
