More Than 110 Charged with ISIS-Related Crimes Since 2013

Written by FEDagent on .

More than 110 people have been charged with crimes related to ISIS in federal court since late 2013, U.S. Assistant Attorney General John Carlin announced Monday.

Last year alone, 60 people were charged with supporting or committing crimes because of their sympathies to ISIS, the largest annual number on record. Arrests in 2016 thus far are less than last year’s.

In his remarks to reporters, Carlin reminded citizens the U.S. Justice Department needs them to be more proactive about notifying federal authorities if they witness someone showing support for foreign terrorist organizations, such as ISIS.

In more than 80 percent of the Islamic State cases that have been prosecuted since 2013, someone in the community of the accused person believed they had witnessed the activity for which the person was ultimately charged, according to Carlin. In more than half of those cases, the witnesses did not report anything to law enforcement authorities until after the charges were made, Reuters reports.
