OPM is Making USAJOBS More User-Friendly

In an effort to make finding and applying for federal jobs a more user-friendly process, the Office of Personnel Management released the first round of updates to USAJOBS Wednesday.

These updates were the first of several to come in the following months as part of OPM’s major redesign of the federal job portal.

This first iteration includes updates to streamline the application process. Applicants are now able to build their resumes directly on site, or upload files with the opportunity to preview before submitting.

An application tracker will now display an applicant’s progress from start to finish, and the portal will now automatically save their progress. Before final submission to an agency, the site will now prompt applicants to verify their applications as complete and accurate.

“In addition to improving the usability of the website and the overall application system, these changes will increase the number of completed applications agencies receive, which will further enhance a fair and open competition for Federal Government jobs,” according to a recent post on the OPM Director’s Blog.

OPM released a video with a step-by-step guide to demonstrate these new changes.

“Throughout the rest of the year, new features will be added to increase the usability of the USAJOBS website by enhancing the job application process for those interested in careers in the Federal Government,” said Acting OPM Director Beth Cobert in a statement.  “By streamlining the USAJOBS process, we will also improve our ability to attract the best and brightest to apply for jobs in the Federal workforce,” Cobert said.

OPM also created a new design system for the USAJOBS website that takes advantage of the new U.S. Government Web Design Standards and resources jointly released by the United States Digital Service and GSA’s 18F designers, developers and product. In the coming months, OPM will apply the new design standards across the remainder of the USAJOBS website.
