OPM Lands CIO from the Pentagon

The Defense Department’s Principal Deputy CIO, David DeVries, is leaving the Pentagon to run OPM’s IT department.

david devriesAnnounced today, OPM Acting Director Beth Cobert said DeVries will drive OPM’s "technology transformation efforts," including working with the Pentagon to form the National Background Investigations Bureau, a new agency that would be responsible for federal background checks in the aftermath of a massive cyber intrusion into OPM's background check records, reports NextGov.

While OPM will continue to manage background checks, DOD will build the information systems that manage and protect the records.

In his new role as OPM’s CIO, DeVries will act as a facilitator between OPM and DOD, “ensuring integration” between the two agencies and beyond.

“Dave will be missed by DoD, but DOD isn’t losing his expertise,” said Terry Halvorsen, DOD’s CIO in a statement. “As DOD and OPM continue to improve current IT systems and begin the development of the new IT services and environment to support the NBIB, he will play a key leadership role, ensuring integration between OPM and DOD.”

DeVries will also manage various other ongoing projects, including a renewed attempt to modernize the agency’s retirement systems, the enterprise migration to the cloud, and 12 other major IT investments.
