National Police Week Vigil Honors Fallen Officers

Communities and law enforcement alike come together each year during National Police Week to honor officers who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

At the May 13th Annual Candlelight Vigil hosted by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF), law enforcement officials and their families gathered as the 252 names of officers killed in the line of duty were formally added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, DC.

The 252 men and women included the 123 officers killed in 2015, plus 129 officers who died in previous years but whose stories of sacrifice had been lost to history until now.

This year’s vigil welcomed Attorney General Loretta Lynch; Department of Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson; president of Concerns of Police Survivors, Brenda Donner; and President of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, Craig Floyd, who each gave remarks at the ceremony on the National Mall.

“It’s been a deadly year for law enforcement,” said Steve Groeninger, a spokesman for NLEOMF. “While this is a somber event, it’s an emotional event for (officers). It’s helpful in their grief process.”

Police week, an initiative created by President Kennedy in 1962, runs from May 15 to 21 this year, and brings together thousands of officers nationwide.
