Top Cyber Experts Tasked with Making U.S. Networks Impenetrable

Cyber experts from the private, public, and academic worlds are coming together to strengthen U.S. cyber security for decades to come.

Announced Wednesday by President Obama, the Commission on Enhancing National Cybersecurity will make long-term recommendations to shore up cyber security in the federal and private sector. Led by former IBM CEO Sam Palmisano and Tom Donilon, President Obama’s former national security adviser, the commission is part of Obama's $19-billion proposal to fortify America’s defenses against hackers.

With last year’s myriad of high-profile attacks on private companies, coupled with the breach of government personnel files, Obama and congressional leaders from both parties hand-selected this panel.

The goal is to defend against attacks on US government computers, in addition to private sector hacks like the Sony Pictures breach. Because government technology equipment is out-of-date, files cannot be encrypted, thus leaving sensitive information vulnerable to attack. Therefore, $3.1 billion is expected to be spent on upgrading the networks and systems hosting most of America’s most sensitive digital information.

The commission’s specific charge is to:

Raise the level of cybersecurity in both the public and private sectors, deter, disrupt, and interfere with malicious cyber activity aimed at the U.S. or its allies and respond effectively to and recover from cyber incidents.

The panel is rounded out by the following professionals:

- Retired General Keith Alexander, former director of the National Security Agency, now CEO of IronNet Cybersecurity

- Ajay Banga, CEO of MasterCard

- Peter Lee, Corporate Vice President of Microsoft Research

- Joe Sullivan, Chief Security Officer of Uber, former Chief Security Officer of Facebook

- Maggie Wilderotter, Executive Chairman of Frontier Communications

- Steven Chabinsky, General Counsel and Chief Risk Officer of CrowdStrike

- Annie Antón, chair of the School of Interactive Computing at Georgia Tech

- Patrick Gallagher, Chancellor of the University of Pittsburgh, former Director of the National Institute of Standards and Technology

- Herbert Lin, Senior Research Scholar for Cyber Policy and Security at the Stanford Center for International Security and fellow at the Hoover Institution

- Heather Murren, former member of the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission and co-founder of the Nevada Cancer Institute
