In 2019 FEHBP to See Lowest Rate Increase Since 1996

In a call this week, the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) announced annual premiums for 2019 for the Federal Employees Health Benefit Program (FEHBP). The rates amount to an increase, on average, of 1.3 percent over last year.

The news was not entirely negative. According to OPM, the government will increase its contribution to participants’ premiums by 1.2 percent next year, and the agency also noted that the overall rate increase is the lowest since 1996, while the premium increase is the lowest since 1995. By comparison, FEHBP enrollees saw a 6.1 percent increase last year and similar increases in recent years.

According to Federal News Radio, which has a full rundown of the changes, “enrollees in the popular, nationwide Blue Cross Blue Shield Service plans may actually see a decrease in their premiums.”

The new premium rates were released as federal employees face the approach of open season, during which they can easily make changes to their preferred benefits. The period will run from November 12th through December 10th this year.
