Senator John McCain Laid to Rest After Lying in State in Capitol Rotunda

On Sunday, U.S. Senator John McCain was laid to rest on the grounds of the United States Naval Academy, following a time during which his casket was displayed in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda. McCain was only the 31st person in American history to receive the honor of lying in state in the Capitol.

The New York Times obituary for McCain called him “the proud naval aviator who climbed from depths of despair as a prisoner of war in Vietnam to pinnacles of power as a Republican congressman and senator from Arizona and a two-time contender for the presidency.”

McCain’s funeral service was widely attended by the public and covered by national media, with photos of the occasion available from many outlets. CNN has assembled a look-back at McCain’s “life in pictures,” while NPR has published a photo essay highlighting McCain’s funeral. Federal News Radio also has a summary of the day.
