Multiple IT Goals Under PMA ‘On Target’ for Timetables

“Several of the goals the White House tasked Federal CIO Suzette Kent and Department of Agriculture Deputy Secretary Steve Censky with in March to improve the federal government’s IT infrastructure are on target for their various deliverable timetables,” according to FedScoop’s Carten Cordell.

Cordell notes the announcement of a number of initiatives -- including the Technology Modernization Fund awards, the “implementation of a paperless submission and review process at the Small Business Administration, and the continued adoption of Continuous Diagnostics and Mitigation tools” as indicative of the administration’s progress on improving the federal government’s IT capabilities.

This week, a quarterly report was published via Performance.gov, showing notable progress across numerous “key performance indicators.”

OMB highlighted the fact that “45 percent of the Chief Financial Officer Act agencies” are adopting cloud-based email solutions and that “60 percent of the federal government have acquired Phase 1 network asset tools and 30 percent of its Phase 2 user management tools.”

Cordell notes that the report is not entirely rosy, with agencies struggling “to maintain the same momentum” on areas such as software asset management (which was “rated worse than in the previous assessment”) and personal identity verification cards, where “the goals to require 100 percent of privileged users” to utilize the cards “had not improved.”

Kent pointed to a number of factors as responsible for the improvement.

“What’s different now is the critical linkage of the modernization goals, and our commitment to workforce development, in a lockstep path forward,” Kent said. “And, very important, the expectation of accountability and delivery of quarterly results.”
