SEC, FDIC Top List of Best-Paying Federal Agencies

According to numbers from the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM), which released a document entitled Salary Information for the Executive Branch, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) are the two agencies with the highest-paid employees in the federal government.

The SEC dramatically outpaced even the FDIC, with the former offering average salaries of $184,817 in Fiscal Year 2017, while the latter paid an average salary of $145,430.

Rounding out the top five are the Nuclear Regulatory Commission ($130,076), NASA ($122,767), and the Department of Energy ($115,600).

The bottom of the list is comprised of the Social Security Administration ($79,505), the Department of the Army ($78,278), the Department of Veterans Affairs ($77,525), and the Department of Agriculture ($76,144), with the Department of the Air Force ($75,897) taking the last spot.

The average male federal employee made $87,636 in FY 2017, while the average female federal employee made $82,121

The D.C. metropolitan area (including Virginia and Maryland) continue to top the list of best-paying regions, followed by New Jersey, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and California.
