Senators Warner, Kaine Send Letter on Tax Reform Change Harming Relocated Feds

This week, Senators Mark Warner (D-VA) and Tim Kaine (D-VA) sent a letter to GSA Administrator Emily Murphy and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin regarding a recent change to the tax code made pursuant to the recently tax reform overhaul passed by Congress.

As the letter notes, the change under tax reform “eliminated the deduction for job-related moving costs, as well as the exclusion for reimbursements or in-kind contributions made by employers to defray the cost of moving,” which has resulted in unexpected tax bills with potentially ruinous financial implications for many federal employees.

The issue was made public by the Senior Executives Association, which led a coalition letter earlier this month to draw the issue to the attention of both the public and of the agencies and lawmakers with jurisdiction to implement the necessary fixes.

“We appreciate the leadership of Senators Warner and Kaine in ensuring this error -- which has the potential to cause considerable personal damage to thousands of federal employees – is swiftly remedied,” said Senior Executives President Bill Valdez.

“It is sadly ironic that those federal employees most impacted by this mistake include members of the federal law enforcement community and others who have already sacrificially uprooted their entire lives and relocated in the name of public service,” Valdez concluded.

The original coalition letter sent to Murphy and Mnuchin was also signed by the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association, the FAA Managers Association, Federal Managers Association, the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association, the National Association of Federal Veterinarians, the National Federation of Federal Employees, the National Council of Social Security Management Associations, and the Professional Managers Association.
