Obama Nominates ‘Moderate Candidate’ Merrick Garland to Supreme Court

President Obama nominated Merrick Garland, 63, to the Supreme court today in a press conference from the rose garden. If selected, Merrick would fill the Supreme Court opening created by Antonin Scalia's death.

Meanwhile, republicans in Congress vowed to block any replacement for Justice Antonin Scalia until a new president takes office. Because Obama's choice could swing the ideological balance of the court away from conservatives, GOP leaders hoping for a win in the presidential election are saying their decision is not personal but simply a desire to the American people a chance to weigh in on Scalia's replacement.

The AP reports that the GOP has already set up a "task force" that will "orchestrate attack ads, petitions and media outreach" against the nominee. (This coming just after Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch called Garland "a fine man"and a potential compromise choice just last weekend.)

Garland, a judge who is generally perceived as a moderate candidate, is currently the chief judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, and served in the Justice Department during the Clinton administration, supervising the Timothy McVeigh and Unabomber prosecutions, and was appointed to the Court of Appeals in 1997.
