CBP Only Government Agency on 2017 'Best Companies for Veterans'

According to the results of a recently-released survey, jointly conducted by Military.com and job-listing giant Monster.com, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is the only federal agency to make an appearance on this year’s list of best places for veterans to work.

This marks the second consecutive year that CBP has appeared on Monster’s “Best Companies for Veterans” list. The summary of the results notes that CBP “works to consistently and effectively recruit and employ qualified disabled veterans – with an emphasis on ‘effectively.’”

The survey cites as an example CBP’s “strategic use of Special Hiring Authorities for Veterans, which allows CBP to circumvent the typically competitive job-application process by directly appointing qualified veterans into positions within the workforce.”

CBP also receives praise for the establishment of the Special Emphasis Recruitment Team, which was chartered by the National Frontline Recruitment Command specifically to “expand the recruitment efforts of diversity groups to include veterans and transitioning service members.”

The agency’s veteran placements aren’t relegated solely to law enforcement roles within the agency. Instead, CBP maintains a full-time “Veterans Employment Program Manager who advocates for the placement of transitioning service members, veterans, and veterans with disabilities into the agency for all open positions,” including mission support roles.

In a statement released in response to the survey results, Acting CBP Commissioner Kevin McAleenan said, "Veterans are vital to the success for CBP. We are honored to have Veterans represent 35 percent of CBP’s workforce. This country is a model of freedom and democracy because our military has stepped up time and again to challenge tyranny and terror. At CBP, they continue to serve our nation honorably. They serve in uniform, patrolling our borders and guarding our ports of entry. They also work in all kinds of non-uniformed roles, from information technology to import specialist, from public affairs to procurement. We are a better, stronger Nation because of their service."

The full list of employers highlighted by Monster and Military.com are:

  1. ManTech International Corporation
  2. Intelligent Waves
  3. S. Customs and Border Protection
  4. Lockheed Martin
  5. Booz Allen Hamilton
  6. Schneider National
  7. USAA
  8. BAE Systems
  9. Union Pacific Railroad
  10. Boeing

All ten organizations represented on the list have a workforce comprised of at least 15% veterans.
