House Approves Increased Funding for Lawmaker Security

This week, the U.S. House of Representatives passed legislation to provide an additional $25,000 to individual lawmakers’ annual office budgets for the purposes of increased security.

The decision follows the recent high-profile shooting at a practice for members of the GOP Congressional baseball team.

The resolution was introduced by Rep. Gregg Harper (R-Miss.), Chairman of the Committee on House Administration and passed by unanimous consent.

The effect of the resolution is currently time-limited, with the funds remaining available to members through January 2nd, 2018. However, Rep. Kevin Yoder, who chairs the House Legislative Branch Appropriations Subcommittee, which originally considered the bill, indicated the increase could be extended through 2018.

“There are enough resources [for] $25,000 next year, if the House Administration Committee so chooses,” he said.

The funds are also limited to security relating to members’ official duties and cannot be used for enhanced home security, for example.

Also included in the measure is increased funding for the House sergeant-at-arms and an increase in funding for the U.S. Capitol Police by $29.2 million compared to the current spending level.
