Federal Cyber Experts on High Alert for Election Day, Prevent Attacks

Update: Homeland Security said it detected no cyber breaches on election day. The threat of a cyberattack, however, seemed to discourage voters. According to exit polls, voters had little confidence their vote would actually count.

Cyber centers at the Department of Homeland Security, the Justice Department, and the FBI are all on high alert for election day.

With concerns of an election day cyberattack mounting, these agencies, along with the Pentagon, the CIA, and others in the intelligence community, are hunting for any possible threat, officials say.

Intelligence officials told NBC that the concern is so high, for the first time, hundreds of military and intelligence cyber experts working at top secret facilities were tasked with monitoring intelligence about the U.S. presidential election and will react to any threat to the the federal government's communication and command systems.

American officials fear a Russian attack in the form of distributing fake documents and creating fake social media accounts to spread misinformation.

Last week, former NATO commander Admiral James Stavridis told CNBC he was concerned Russia may dump false documents and an attack on the U.S. power grid.

"There is maybe a one in three chance of this happening but it's not insignificant," said Stavridis.

Additionally, Cylance published a video last week wherein researchers hacked a popular voting machine used in the United States and altered total votes for a given candidate. Watch the video below.
