ICE Union Endorses Trump for President

For the first time in history, the labor union representing Immigration and Customs Enforcement employees endorsed GOP nominee Donald Trump Monday.

The National ICE Council represents 5,000 immigration officers and law enforcement support staff, and is the second federal employee union to endorse Trump.

The National Border Patrol Council was the first union to endorse Trump back in March, saying the controversial frontrunner has shown the leadership the country needs by shunning political correctness and making border security a centerpiece of his campaign. NBPC is a subsidiary of the American Federation of Government Employees, which in December endorsed Hillary Clinton in her bid for the White House, according to GovExec.

Chris Crane, the president of the ICE Council and a 13-year ICE officer, said Hillary Clinton received just five percent support in a vote of his members.

The union has been at odds with the Obama administration for years and even filed a lawsuit alleging Obama’s executive orders were preventing ICE employees from doing their jobs and leading a vote of no confidence in ICE leadership.

Crane said he believed Clinton would continue Obama policies that “have forced our officers to violate their oaths to uphold the law.”

In a statement from the National ICE Council on Trump’s website, the union said “by contrast, Donald Trump reached out to us for a meeting, sat down with me to discuss his goals for enforcement, and pledged to support ICE officers, our nation’s laws and our members. In his immigration policy, he has outlined core policies needed to restore immigration security -- including support for increased interior enforcement and border security, an end to Sanctuary Cities, an end to catch-and-release, mandatory detainers, and the canceling of executive amnesty and non-enforcement directives.”

As with the Border Patrol Council, the ICE Council is a subsidiary of the American Federations of Government Employees. AFGE, like other large federal employee groups, has endorsed Clinton.
