January is Human Trafficking Prevention Month

As he has done through his tenure, President Obama designated January as National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month.

Many federal agencies are on the front lines of combatting human trafficking, both domestically and internationally.

The White House has used its power of convening and the federal government to bring together agencies, companies, and organizations to tackle the issue, including creating a new Federal Office on Trafficking in Persons at the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

The FBI highlighted in an agency release the work the Bureau’s Civil Rights Unit performs coordinating trafficking investigations for adult and juvenile foreign nationals forced into slave labor or sex trafficking, in addition to adult victims of domestic sex trafficking, and that of the Violent Crimes Against Children Section, which coordinates investigations involving children under 18 being sexually exploited domestically and those involved in child sex tourism. Also highlighted in the FBI release are efforts by the Office for Victim Assistance (OVA) to aid those subjected to these crimes.

The Bureau continues to engage in the national multi-agency law enforcement Operation Cross Country (OCC) – see FEDagent’s 2014 and 2015 coverage of OCC – which in nine iterations has recovered over 750 child victims and detained over 1,000 pimps and traffickers.

The FBI is also working with Canadian authorities on a similar domestic effort called Operation Northern Spotlight.
