Make Your Disaster Plan Today, September is National Preparedness Month

September is National Preparedness Month, and Ready gov is encouraging everyone to participate by making a plan for how to stay safe and communicate during the disasters.

This year’s theme, “Don't Wait. Communicate. Make Your Emergency Plan Today.” focuses on equipping citizens with the knowledge they need to be prepared for any natural or man-made disaster.

Federal, state, and local agencies, as well as companies, non-profits, community organizations, and individual citizens are joining forces to promote and support National Preparedness Month, which culminates in the national day of action, National PrepareAthon! Day, on September 30th. The day will focus on teaching communities how to prepare for six specific hazards: earthquake, flood, hurricane, tornado, wildfire, and winter storm.

First launched in 2013, America’s PrepareAthon! is a nationwide,  community-based campaign to increase emergency preparedness and resilience through hazard-specific drills, group discussions, and exercises.

The goal of the PrepareAthon! campaign is to increase the number of individuals who:

  • Understand which disasters could happen in their community
  • Know what to do to be safe and mitigate damage
  • Take action to increase their preparedness
  • Participate in community resilience planning

Many resources can be found on Ready.gov, as well as the America’s PrepareAthon! website, which is curated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), part of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). More information about America’s PrepareAthon! can be found here.
