Security Clearance Backlog Hits Steady State

Following a closed-door hearing on security clearance reforms, Senators on the Senate Intelligence Committee announced that the security clearance backlog has reached the long –awaited “steady state.” In 2018, the backlog peaked with 750,000 pending cases. The system has undergone significant reforms in the time since then to reduce wait times and expedite investigations.

New Assistant Director at CISA Puts Focus on Critical Infrastructure

In his first public appearance as Assistant Director for Cybersecurity at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), Bryan Ware set out the agency’s plan for 2020. Ware noted the importance of state security and data policy for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) as well as discussing the key focus areas for CISA moving into the new year.

GAO Reports on Effectiveness of Kingpin Act Targeting Narcotics Trafficking

The Government Accountability Office (GAO) has issued a report on the effectiveness of legislation passed in 2000 which allows the Department of the Treasury to work in concert with other agencies to designate and sanction foreign individuals and entities that contribute to illegal narcotics trafficking. GAO struggled to isolate the impacts of the Kingpin Act with other government initiatives to combat illicit drug trafficking and recommended more uniform methods for agencies to report on their efforts in relation to this law.
