The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF) generates increased public support for the law enforcement profession by permanently recording and appropriately commemorating the service and sacrifice of law enforcement officers; and to provide information that will help promote law enforcement safety. The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial, completed in 1991, is located in Washington, D.C., occupying Judiciary Square, and is visited by 200,000 people annually. The Memorial honors federal, state and local law enforcers for their dedication and sacrifice and features bronze sculptures depicting a series of adult lions protecting its cubs, symbolizing the protective role of law enforcement officers. Blue-gray marble walls are inscribed with the names of more than 18,000 officers who have been killed in the line of duty (dating back to 1792). Each May, during National Police Week new names of fallen officers are added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial. In the year 2000, the United States Congress and President Bill Clinton authorized the establishment of a National Law Enforcement Museum in Washington, DC, paving the way for the nation's largest and most comprehensive museum honoring the duty and sacrifice of America's law enforcement officers. The Museum plans are for a 90,000-square foot underground facility near the Memorial which will tell the story of American law enforcement through interactive exhibits, collections, research and education. In addition to securing Congressional authority and federal land to build the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial and the National Law Enforcement Museum, the NLEOMF successfully advocated for federal laws that: require all American flags to be lowered to half-staff each year on May 15, Peace Officers Memorial Day, and authorized the US Mint to issue 500,000 National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Commemorative Silver Dollars, to raise approximately $1.5 million in proceeds for maintenance and repair of the Memorial.
